Subject: Anyone have a Tropez 900DL cordless phone ?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Was hunting birdies this evening... and a most frusterating one was
on 435.200. After unplugging just about everything in the house,
I finally tracked it down to the Tropez handset. The thing was
"on-hook" while sitting on the coffee table, but was emitting
a fairly hot signal on 435.200 once every 1.5 sec approx. This
appears to be an artifact of its "homing signal"... which it
does periodically to check link integrity with the base unit.
What's wrong with this picture is that the phone is supposed
to be on 900 MHz and use a digitally scrambled modulation (not
spread-spectrum but something akin to G3RUH type modulation).
With my R7000 in FMn mode, I can plainly hear DTMF tones and voice
coming off this handset. Some much for the scrambling! And
*what* is it doing on 435.200 ? Maybe it needs to be launched
into orbit so it fully qualifies as an OSCAR... :-)
I'm looking for comments from others that have this phone and
equipment on 435 that could look for similar noises. Perhaps
mine is somehow defective...
I'll be getting in contact with Tropez to discuss this with
them.

Subject: DVR for an RC-96 Repeater Controller
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Hello all! We are interested in the digital voice recorder specs for the
RC-96 repeater controller. Basically, we want to try and design one from
scratch using a readily available digital voice recording chip (a la radio
shack). We need to know some specifics about the controller, and how it
communicates with the DVR. The manual describes a serial stream of data
that is sent (extended user function mode) that consists of 24 bits of
information followed by a data stream which is (as best we can tell from
the manual) specific to the DVR. Other than that any information would be
greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Bruce

I read Steve's posting shortly after pulling a new 733A out of the
box, and tested the CTCSS. I don't have a service monitor, so I can
only report what I'm hearing from a speaker, compared to the CTCSS
sent by a couple other radios.
The 733A CTCSS isn't a lot louder than the other radios, but it is
distorted -- to distorted to be considered acceptable.
Too bad -- the 733's got some nice bells and whistles. But its not
performing where it counts.
BTW, it is serial # 51101980.
Also, this radio is not very good on intermod -- considedrably worse
than my Icom 2410 in this fairly high RF area. Turning on the "AIP"
does help a lot, but lowers the sensivity about 5 to 10 dB.

I've heard that some people put heat sinks on their HT's.
They do this by unscrewing the belt clip and screwing on a heat sink
in it's place. Apparently this keeps the radio MUCH cooler.

Recently I purchased an IC-820H and have been reasonably happy with it.
Afterwards, a friend forwarded an article by G3RUH reviewing the 820. Had I
seen that document before buying the radio I might have had other thoughts,
but the original motivation for choosing the Icom remains - an RF system
of modern design and manufacturing methods. I HATE WIRES inside my radios.
Needless to say the 820 still has wires inside, but nothing like my Yaesu
FT-290R (the original, pre-Mark II).
For all of Icom's hype about the radio being perfect for satellite use, the
gist of G3RUH's review is the radio is clumbsy for satellite use. Also
G3RUH says (out of the box, unmodified IC-820H):
Over the last six years I've tested innumerable radios for 9600 bps
operation. The Icom IC-820H now shares top place with Kantronics' D4-10.
(The latter is however 2-channel, crystal controlled and UHF only).
I would have mailed the article to you if you had included an email address.
Meanwhile I'll ftp it to ftp.ucsd:/hamradio/packet/tcpip/incoming/ and call
it ic820h-by-g3ruh.txt. Its about 20k.
